Katrina Work Crews FAQ



Q: Can I register as an individual or do I need to be a part of a group?

A: We are set up to work with groups of 4 or more. If your are 16-18 years old you need to be  part of a group that has an adult leader who is at least  21 years old. If you do not have a group and would like to go we may be able to connect you with a group who is going.

Q: What is our contribution to the project?

A: It is $225.00 for 7 days.  If your group wants to stay longer it will be slightly higher to cover daily expenses like food, etc. This includes food, rooming, and supplies for your projects. You provide your own transportation. The cost will be lower if you stay less than 7 days. (See below for schedule of per person contributions)

  • 3 days = $185

Q: How old do I need to be?

A: You must be at least 16 years old to work on a Katrina Work Crew.

Q: What are the dates?

A: We are sending groups starting in February 2006. We will work with whatever dates your group would like to go, if there is space available during that time. Summer months are filling fast. Call now for dates.

Q: How do we get there?

A: The options are driving to Ocean Springs or flying into Gulf Port, MS or Mobile AL. (Gulf Port, MS is 20 minutes from Ocean Springs while Mobile, AL is 60 minutes)

Q: Where will we be staying?

A: You will be staying at Camp Victor located in the Distribution Center building.  There are showers available. You will need to bring a  twin size sheet or mattress pad and sleeping bag. There is some housing available in homes of congregation members for older people with special needs or long term volunteers. If you have a motor home there is limited space available to park one.

Q: What shots/immunizations do I need before I go to Mississippi?

A: A current Tetanus booster(within the past 5 years) is required. A Hepatitis A shot is optional.

Q: Do we bring our own food?

A: No, 3 meals per day are provided at Camp Victor  They have a brand new commercial kitchen. You will pack a lunch to take with you to your work site. Breakfast and dinner are served at Camp Victor.

Q: What will groups do while they are there?

A: Your group could be assigned to the distribution center, work in the kitchen helping with meals or go to a house to assist with reconstruction. They do have 2 medical clinics so if you are a medical professional you could choose to work there.

Q: What is the Distribution Center?

A: This is a warehouse that is filled with supplies for reconstruction, clean up and daily living supplies that residents might need. They also have food here for families.

Q: How long will they need groups in Ocean Springs to help with reconstruction?

A: They are estimating that rebuilding will take a minimum of 5 years. Youth Encounter is committed to going down for at least 2 years.

Q: Who is Youth Encounter partnering with for the Katrina Work Crews?

A: Youth Encounter is partnering with Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

Q: What about transportation?

A: You provide the transportation for your group, this includes your time in Ocean Springs, MS.
